Abstract

This review analyses a monograph by Anvar Aksanov, a Kazan-based researcher of interstate relations between the Kazan Khanate and Muscovy during the Khanate’s sovereignty. The reviewer analyses the correspondence between the aim of the work and its contents; additionally, he explores the essence and origins of the positivist methodology criticised by A. Aksanov, questioning whether the methods used by Aksanov may be considered hermeneutics. The reviewer also estimates the extent to which the book reflects the contribution of the English-language historiography to the topic. The reviewer examines the strengths and weaknesses of the research, concluding that Aksanov provides a substantial description of the details of Kazan – Moscow interstate relations insinuated by chroniclers.
