Abstract

A handwritten manuscript of An Essay of Narration about Russia in nine parts is kept in the Department of Manuscripts of the Russian National Library and contains six books (Ф. IV‑34/1–6). Its author, Ivan P. Yelagin (1725–1793), senator, director of imperial theatres, master of masonic lodges, and historian, worked on the text between 1788 and 1793. In 1803, the first part was published posthumously. This paper contains the previously unpublished chapters V and VI from the second part of An Essay of Narration about Russia, in which Yelagin describes the story of Izyaslav Yaroslavich, prince of Kiev (1024–1078). Historiographers will find it interesting to learn about Yelagin’s attitude to the events of 1068, i. e. the uprising of the Kiev community that expelled Prince Izyaslav, who failed to protect the principality from the Cuman invasion. Researchers of historiography will note Yelagin’s peculiar style in recounting history, while experts in the field of intellectual history may appreciate the description of the Russian mason’s attitude to the military events of the eleventh century.
