Abstract

The review explores the conceptual and content sides of a thematic volume of a well-known German yearbook, analysing the form and essence of the understanding of heroism and the heroic in official Russia between the 18th and early 20th centuries. The reviewer agrees that the topic the authors consider is relevant as part of the area in question. He also emphasises the debatable character of issues concerning the Russian authorities’ attitude to people’s behavior in extreme conditions of war at its different stages and in different social and political situations, and that of society. Close attention is paid to the new interpretations of the social aspects of reflection upon heroism in the context of World War I.
